Surprise! Roxanne Alexander Jones, Vice President of Global Programs, was truly caught off guard to learn she had been named the 2025 recipient of the OUtstanding Servant Nurse Leader Award from the Ottawa University School of Nursing. The award recognizes a nurse leader in the community who exemplifies the essence of servant nurse leadership and serves as an inspiration to Ottawa University nursing students.
Created in 2022, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the award recognizes those who stepped forward during one of the most challenging chapters in healthcare history. The pandemic’s impact on the Kansas City region was particularly acute; strained hospitals, severe staffing shortages, and extraordinary demands on frontline caregivers highlighted the urgent need for courageous, compassionate nurse leadership. This award illuminates those who model that spirit.
The award also honors the legacy of Florence Nightingale, known as The Lady with the Lamp. Nightingale’s life demonstrated not only compassion and service, but unwavering courage and advocacy in the face of hardship. The award seeks to honor leaders who embody this dual legacy: those who light the way for others and those who lead with boldness and conviction through the most challenging conditions. Roxanne is a living reflection of this calling.
Ottawa University’s recognition affirms what we at Global Care Force see every day: a leader who uplifts others, serves with integrity, and inspires volunteers around the world.
Join us in congratulating Roxanne on this well-deserved and unexpected honor!
And yes — it wasn’t easy, but Global Care Force staff and Roxanne’s family managed to keep the secret from her!
