Oleksandr’s Journey: Finding Medical Care in the Midst of War
by Brenda Poor

Stories from the Field – Ukraine

At 72, Oleksandr had a simple, steady life in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine. He supported himself through small-scale farming and local trade, never expecting much to change. But his life was disrupted in March 2022, when Russian troops invaded and occupied his village.

Alone and cut off from support, Oleksandr struggled under harsh restrictions by the Russians. His greatest challenge, however, was his health. Living with a chronic endocrine condition, he had no way to monitor his vital signs or adjust his medications, that is when he was able to get medications. Months without proper care left his condition worsening and uncertain.

That changed when Global Care Force volunteers arrived. Oleksandr met with an endocrinologist, who adjusted his treatment plan and began regular check-ups. Since then, he has been able to receive the medications and ongoing care he needs, something that was impossible under occupation. Now he receives monthly checkups and medication refills.

“Of course, at my age I live with health issues that require daily medication,” Oleksandr said. “Specialized care is out of reach for many of us. Getting to the cities is impossible, especially now that the war continues. But with your help, everything becomes possible. That is what makes a real difference in these tough conditions of today.”
