Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background, and where are you from?
After a lengthy and rewarding career as an oncology nurse, I retired two years ago with a desire to continue to find purpose in new endeavors in the world of volunteerism. My home is in Olathe, KS.
How did you hear about Global Care Force?
I am so thankful that Roxanne Jones, Vice President of Global Missions, introduced me to Global Care Force more than a year ago at a community social event; I was immediately interested. I was fortunate to be a volunteer nurse with the April 2024 team that served in Ukraine. I was very impressed with the organization as well as the other team members.
You have volunteered with Global Care Force in Ukraine and at their offices. Tell us what you did.
My team in Ukraine consisted of four physicians and two nurses, along with interpreters, logistics, and pharmacy support. As nurses, we supported the team with history taking, vital signs, and triage visits with patients. I was so impressed with the coordinated work and leadership for the team, which enabled us to serve many patients efficiently at each location.
I have also enjoyed volunteering at the Global Care Force office in Lenexa, KS, assisting with clerical tasks for the Donor Relations Manager. Many tasks are needed to help keep the organization running smoothly.
Tell us about serving in Ukraine. What impacted you the most?
It was a truly transforming experience to work with the resilient Ukrainians and experience the communities where they lived.
I was amazed by the humble call to service by each team member from around the world to join the Global Care Force’s team. Our team members were from New Zealand, and different US locations, as well as Ukrainians, coming together to show compassion to those in need of care. Because of the organized efforts, we were each able to use our expertise to make a significant impact.
Any stories you can share, whether a patient or Ukraine staff member that touched you? What memories will stay with you?
Our patients appreciated the care they received and welcomed us into their communities. They shared their experiences of enduring strength while living in a war zone. Some were living in areas that had been recently under Russian occupation. It was a cruel reality for them, but they stayed strong and hopeful while carrying out daily tasks the best they could. I was grateful to be able to listen and assist with their healthcare.
Is volunteering the secret to having a fulfilled life?
Volunteering is a way for me to find purpose and fulfillment in my retired life. Serving helps me become more aware of others’ needs and situations unlike my own, which makes my life more meaningful and worthwhile when I reach outside my own sphere and make a difference.
If someone is considering volunteering with Global Care Force, what would you tell them?
I would encourage others to consider volunteering with Global Care Force and connect with a Global Care Force team member to ask questions and understand the situations they could be involved with to make a difference.
